Safety Problems in Using Polymer Lithium Batteries

All lithium-ion batteries, whether in the past or in recent years, including polymer lithium-ion batteries and lithium iron phosphate batteries, are very afraid of internal short circuit, external short circuit and overcharge.

Because the chemical property of lithium is very active, it is easy to burn. When the battery is discharged and charged, the internal temperature of the battery will continue to rise, the gas generated in the activation process will expand, the internal pressure of the battery will increase, and the pressure will reach a certain level. If the shell is scarred, it will break, causing leakage, fire, and even explosion.

When an ordinary lithium-ion battery is overcharged or short circuited, there may be temperature rise, decomposition of positive electrode materials, oxidation of negative electrode and electrolyte materials, which will lead to gas expansion and increase of internal pressure of the battery. When the pressure reaches a certain level, explosion may occur. However, polymer lithium ion batteries, because of the use of colloidal electrolytes, will not generate a lot of gas due to liquid boiling, thus eliminating the possibility of violent explosion.
